Prep Defeats Wooton

By Chris Lemmo

The boys were back in town tonight as the Hoyas return for a three game homestand this week. They showed up big defeating a strong Wootton team (ranked #5 in the area by the Washington Post) 9-3. Senior and Assistant Captain, Tom Olson, had a hat trick, his first one since ending St. Alban’s season in the MAPHL Playoffs last year. Those who assisted him in this hat trick were, Nolan Urgo, Peter Roche, and Michael Davidson. Another Hoya with a hat trick was Alex Chaconas. His three goals had assists from Nathaniel Deleede, Ben Holman (2), and Clay Lanham. Daniel Cole and James Flannery also continued their red hot points streak with each scoring a goal tonight. Holman assisted Flannery to make it 7-2. Michael Davidson netted his second goal of the season (we forgot to credit him for his first one in the Walter Johnson game) with assists by Matthew Scola and Alex Ratliff. The Hoyas look to build off of this moment as they have an all important league game against Spalding on Wednesday in Rockville. Hoya Saxa!

Prep v. St. Stephens/St. Agnes Game Summary

By Chris Lemmo

The Hoyas took to the ice today in an all important double conference game (IHC and MAPHL) and loss in a heartbreaker 3-2 to St. Stephens/Agnes. The Hoyas jumped out to an early lead goal by James Flannery midway through the first period. Late in the period St. Stephens tied it up at 1. Heading into the second period St. Stephens gained momentum and was able to maintain continuous pressure in the Hoyas defensive zone and took the lead 2-1. Into the third period the Hoyas were unable to get many shots off and struggled against a tough Saints defense. The Hoyas were able to cut the lead to 3-2 on a goal by James Flannery assisted by Daniel Cole but could not tie it up with only a minute left to play. The Hoyas take the ice again next Monday against Wootton in Rockville.

Prep Defeats Walter Johnson 9-1

By Chris Lemmo

What a great night for Prep Hockey as they hosted their first home game against Walter Johnson in a non-conference matchup. The Hoyas were dominate from the opening face-off and struck early and often in the first period, scoring the first 4 goals of the game. Near the end of the first Walter Johnson struck to cut the lead 4-1. In the second the Hoyas continued their offensive prowess tacking on 4 more goals to put the score at 8-1. The third period was rather uneventful as the rout ended in a 9-1 score in favor of the Hoyas. The offense tallied 45 shots and Junior goaltender Will Boggs saw little action but successfully stopped 11 of the 12 shots that came his way. Below are the Hoyas who put the points on the board.

Goal 1 James Flannery assisted by Daniel Cole
Goal 2 Alex Ratliff assisted by Nathan DeLeede
Goal 3 Rocco Nascone assisted by Matthew Scola
Goal 4 James Flannery assisted by Daniel Cole & Michael Davidson
Goal 5 Alex Chaconas assisted by Clay Lanham
Goal 6 Daniel Cole assisted by James Flannery
Goal 7 Michael Davidson assisted by James Flannery and Daniel Cole
Goal 8 Rocco Nascone assisted by Alex Chicanos
Goal 9 Peter Roche assisted by Alex Ratliff

Looking forward to Thursday’s important game against St. Stephens/St. Agnes. Hoya Saxa!

Varsity v. Mt. St. Joes Recap

By Chris Lemmo
Date: November 28, 2016

To kickoff the 2016-17 season the Hoyas took to the ice tonight against Mount St. Joes in a MAPHL League game. The Hoyas wasted no time getting on the board with an early first period goal by Alex Chaconas assisted by Matthew Scola. Mount St. Joes was able to tie it up midway through the first. Later in the first period Mount St. Joes struck again to take the lead 2-1.  Prep wasted no time in the second, tying the game up 2-2 with a goal by Ben Holman, assisted by Tom Olson and James Flannery.  Unfortunately in the second period prep could not find the back of the net and fell behind 4-2 after the second. After killing off many penalties, some questionable calls, the Hoyas were tired but still managed to create many opportunities in their offensive zone. The game ended with a 4-2 loss as Prep falls to 0-1 to start the season but looks ahead to Wednesday’s matchup vs. Walter Johnson. Hoya Saxa.

Prep Names New Hockey Coach

On September 9, 2016, Athletic Director Dan Paro announced that Brian Danver would be taking over as Head Coach of the Hoyas’ Varsity Hockey team.  As Coach Paro noted in his announcement:

Brian knows Prep and our student body well, having been our Head Soccer coach for the past 3 years.  Brian was a talented student athlete in high school, competing in soccer, hockey and tennis.  Hockey was his love and he played for Washington Little Caps, Reston Raiders and St. Albans.  He was named to the MSHL All Star team during his senior season.

Brian attended Washington College, earning all conference honors in both soccer and tennis.  Brian teaches at Mater Dei School and will be entering his 8th season as Head Coach for hockey.  Having competed against Prep while a student at St. Albans, Brian clearly understands the standards of competition that are so important to a Prep student athlete.
