The squad started up a busy week of three games this Tuesday with a classic game of good ol’ rock-em sock-em hockey against the Bears of Landon. Hoyas packed the stands in support, each one of them trying to catch a glimpse of their brothers giving it all to beat our arch-nemesis. Although the game did end in 4-4 tie, this was no doubt a win for Prep.
After a chippy start to the first period, Captain Ryan Holman netted the first goal of the game, slapping in a quick assist from sophomore MacDowell Johnston. The Hoyas held this advantage into the second, but the bears had a few tricks up their sleeves. Somehow they managed to rack up four goals, and at the end of the second period, all did not seem well. But as the student section knew, Hoyas never give up hope. Early in the third on a power play, junior defenseman Blaine Green gave his brothers what they came out to see, burying the puck right past a bear and into the net. Blaine set off what might be one of the best comebacks in Hoyas Hockey history. With 7:40 to go Jake Neeb gracefully zoomed across the ice and tallied up another goal all by himself. The next six-and-a-half minutes raced by pretty uneventfully, aside from a successful Hoyas penalty kill, and before we all knew it, the announcer chimmed in, “One minute left in regulation.” Unwilling to accept defeat, the boys gave every last bit of what they had left. As their brothers in the stands watched in agony, fearing defeat, and bears watched in anticipation of victory, Blaine and Neeb teamed up and netted the Hoyas’ fourth and final goal, evening the score at 4-4. The Prep side of the stands erupted in complete joy as time expired and the Hoyas, although not victorious, emerged unbeaten.
Next up the Hoyas face the Bullis Bulldogs on Wednesday before taking on MAPHL foe Gonzaga on Friday at Cabin John.
Prep vs. Landon-1st Battle
Prep V1 vs Walter Johnson
The Hoyas started off the season right this Monday with a commanding 8-2 victory over the Wildcats of Walter Johnson. After the first two games were missed because of refs not showing up and a cancellation, the squad was eager to finally get out on the ice and show this city what it’s made of, and boy did they deliver.
The first period itself was pretty uneventful, that is until WJ slapped in a late goal with about three minutes left, the first of the game. This set off sophomore Tom “You Can’t See Me” Olson who quickly answered by drilling in the Hoyas’ first goal of the season with a beautiful feed from fellow sophomore Ben Holman. Tom and Ben set of a bombardment of six goals to which WJ could not answer until only four and a half minutes remained in the third period. Senior captains Jack “Cobra” Olson, Joey “Blades” Altemus, and Ryan “Half” Holman rose to their new positions of leadership on a line that would tally up eleven points consisting of four goals and seven assists. Junior Michael Melch and sophomores Johnny Mac Mulera and Alex Ratliff buried the remaining three goals. Freshman Daniel Cole proved his worth, racking up two assists, along with fellow ninth-grader and netminder Will Boggs, who got the start in the first two periods after senior Dillon Nobel suffered a minor injury in a weekend football tournament. Junior Michael “Mags” Magnarelli rounded off the stat sheet with his assist to Ratliff with two minute left to go.
The boys played their hearts out in this game, but after a short break for Thanksgiving they have a tough schedule to play. The Hoyas begin the month of December with a battle against arch-rival Landon on Tuesday, Dec 2 at Rockville Ice Arena and another skirmish against Bullis the very next day, also at RIA. The Hoyas will cap off that week with a match against the purple eagles of Gonzaga on Friday, Dec 5 at Cabin John.
